American jazz clarinetist and bandleader Benny Goodman is known as the "King of Swing." He is born in Chicago, US, on May 30. Although he also played classical music with works by Copland and Hindemith, he is remembered in the jazz genre.

 

At the age of 13, Benjamin David Goodman (1909-1986)  joined the musician's union. After many years of freelance work, he formed his first regular band in 1934, which was featured on a network radio show from New York. On tour the following year, his band was a huge success.

 

An excellent musician and jazz soloist, he insisted on adequate time for rehearsals and precise playing within his band. Goodman also employed some of the best arrangers including Edgar Sampson and Fletcher Henderson, and other musicians like Harry James (trumpeter) and Gene Krupa (drummer).

 

The band appeared in several films, like "The Big Broadcast of 1937," and played in the first jazz concert at Carnegie Hall in 1838. His sextet became a popular jazz group.

Benny Goodman many American bands all over the world. He published the Kingdom of Swing with music critic Irving Kolodin. A biographical film, The Benny Goodman Story, was released in 1955.
