ProkofievComposer Sergey (or Sergei) Prokofiev is born April 23, at Sontsovka, in the Ukraine.

Sergey Sergeyevich Prokofiev (1891-1953) was a Russian composer, pianist and conductor. He is famous for operas The Love for Three Oranges, ballet Romeo and Juliet, and the popular charming tale for children, Peter and the Wolf  for narrator and orchestra, for which he wrote his own libretto based on a Russian folk tale.

When the Russian Revolution broke out in 1917, the brilliant composer was 26 years old. The following year, he left Russia and lived in different countries including UK, France, Japan, and the US. He eventually returned to his homeland and died there the same day as Stalin, March 5, 1953.

Prokofiev's output was varied yet extensive and he demonstrated great lyricism. He wrote seven symphonies including "Classical" Symphony, considered his most famous work in which he blends his own musical idiom to the classical style of Mozart and Haydn.

His well-known opera The Love for Three Oranges was produced in Chicago, US, 1921. The following year he went to live in Paris where he worked with the famous impresario, Sergei Diaghilev, who produced several of his compositions.

Sergey Prokofiev is known to blend the radical and intellectual toughness in his time to the Russian romantic tradition of Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.  He is considered one of the greatest and popular composers of the 20th century.
