Anyone who has heard drummer Brian Blade perform knows that he is one of the most dynamic drummers on the jazz scene today (or on any other scene, for that matter). He has performed and recorded with some of the most prolific musicians of our time, including Wayne Shorter, Joni Mitchell, Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, and Bob Dylan. Blade is now set to perform with John McLaughlin and Chick Corea’s Five Peace Band.
The list of musicians with whom Brian Blade has performed is vast. But, until now, Chick Corea’s name was not on that list. The legendary pianist got his start with Miles Davis in the late-1960’s. Since then, he has recorded and performed prolifically. Legendary guitarist John McLaughlin also got his start with Miles Davis in the late-1960’s. Both McLaughlin and Corea can be heard on the groundbreaking jazz-fusion album Bitches Brew recorded by Miles Davis in the late-60’s and early-70’s. Saxophonist Kenny Garrett and bassist Christian McBride will also be joining the band.
I consider anything Brian Blade has recorded since the early-1990’s to be essential listening for all drummers. His enormous dynamic range, and his ability to fit perfectly into all styles of music are attributes we should all strive for---and this includes non-drummers as well. If you’re not familiar with his playing, here are some albums that will serve as a good introduction to his style:
Perceptual: Brian Blade Fellowship
Mood Swing: Joshua Redman
Beyond the Wall: Kenny Garrett
Footprints, Live: Wayne Shorter
Wrecking Ball: Emmylou Harris
Time Out of Mind: Bob Dylan
Taming the Tiger: Joni Mitchell
Feels Like Home: Norah Jones
Blade will begin touring with the Five Peace Band on March 26, 2009. I would highly recommend checking out this all-star lineup if they will be coming through your town.
